JoSAA vs CSAB: What's the Difference and Which Applies to You?

Sep 17, 2026

Overview

JoSAA and CSAB are two separate counselling bodies that candidates often confuse, largely because both deal with admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. The key distinction is straightforward once explained: JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) runs the primary, large-scale counselling covering IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs together, while CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) runs separate Special Rounds afterward, specifically to fill vacant NIT+ system seats that remain once JoSAA's entire process concludes.

If you're eligible for JEE-based counselling this year, you will always go through JoSAA first - CSAB only becomes relevant if you either didn't secure a satisfactory seat through JoSAA, or didn't register for JoSAA at all despite being eligible.

Type

JoSAA and CSAB are both centralised, government-run engineering seat allocation bodies in India.

JoSAA conducts the primary counselling process; CSAB conducts supplementary Special Rounds afterward.

Both allot seats based on JEE Main or JEE Advanced rank, following a structured, multi-round online process.

Institutes Covered: The Core Difference

JoSAA covers all IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs together — more than 120 institutes in total, including all 23 IITs.

CSAB covers only the NIT+ system — NITs, IIITs, SPAs (Schools of Planning and Architecture), IIEST Shibpur, and GFTIs.

IIT seats are exclusively allocated through JoSAA — IITs do not participate in CSAB under any circumstance, so CSAB is never a route to an IIT seat.

Provider

JoSAA is conducted under the guidance of the Ministry of Education, coordinating admissions across all participating IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.

CSAB Special Rounds are typically coordinated by a designated NIT on a rotational basis for that admission cycle.

Both bodies publish their schedules, eligibility rules, and seat matrices on their respective official portals — josaa.nic.in  for JoSAA, and csab.nic.in  for CSAB.

Key Details: Timeline and Process

  • JoSAA typically runs across six rounds, beginning shortly after JEE Advanced results, generally in June, and concluding by mid-to-late July.

  • CSAB Special Rounds begin only after JoSAA's entire process concludes, typically starting in late July or early August, and usually consist of two special rounds.

  • Choices submitted during JoSAA are not carried forward to CSAB — all candidates, including those already holding a JoSAA seat, must submit entirely fresh choices for CSAB.

  • The Seat Acceptance Fee in JoSAA is ₹35,000 for General/OBC-NCL/EWS candidates and ₹15,000 for SC/ST/PwD candidates, adjusted later into first-year tuition fees.

  • CSAB charges a separate Special Round Enrolment Fee, historically around ₹40,000 for General/OBC-NCL/EWS candidates and ₹19,000 for SC/ST/PwD candidates.

  • If a candidate already holding a JoSAA seat is allotted a new seat through CSAB, their earlier JoSAA seat is automatically and permanently cancelled — there is no way to revert once this happens.

  • CSAB retains the same Home State (50%) / Other State (50%) quota structure for NITs that JoSAA uses.

Key Eligibility: Who Can Use CSAB

  • Candidates who were eligible for the NIT+ system in JoSAA based on their JEE Main rank, but never registered for JoSAA at all, can register fresh directly in CSAB.

  • Candidates who registered in JoSAA but were not allotted any seat by the final round remain eligible for CSAB.

  • Candidates who already hold a JoSAA seat and have paid the Partial Admission Fee can still participate in CSAB if they want to try for a better NIT/IIIT/GFTI branch or college.

  • Candidates whose JoSAA seat was cancelled due to document errors, non-payment of fees, or voluntary withdrawal also remain eligible for CSAB.

  • Candidates who are not Indian nationals and not OCI/PIO holders are not eligible for CSAB seat allocation.

What to Do Now

Always register for and complete JoSAA first if you're aiming for any IIT seat, since CSAB offers no IIT route whatsoever.

If you're unsatisfied with your JoSAA outcome, or missed registering despite being eligible, treat CSAB as your genuine second chance at an NIT, IIIT, or GFTI seat — not a lesser, informal backup option.

Understand the seat-cancellation rule clearly before opting into CSAB while holding a JoSAA seat, since accepting a new CSAB allotment permanently releases your existing JoSAA seat with no way back.

Prepare a completely fresh CSAB choice list rather than assuming your JoSAA preferences carry over, since they explicitly do not.

Before finalizing your CSAB choices, comparing recent CSAB opening and closing rank trends against JoSAA's final round data can help you judge realistically where cutoffs are likely to loosen.

Key Things to Remember

  • JoSAA covers IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs together across six rounds; CSAB covers only the NIT+ system (NITs, IIITs, SPAs, GFTIs) through two Special Rounds after JoSAA ends.

  • IIT seats are available only through JoSAA – CSAB never allocates IIT seats.

  • CSAB requires entirely fresh registration and choice filling; JoSAA choices and registration do not carry over.

  • Accepting a new seat in CSAB while holding a JoSAA seat permanently cancels that earlier JoSAA seat.

This article explains the general structural difference and typical timeline between JoSAA and CSAB counselling. Candidates should verify exact dates, fees, and eligibility rules for the current admission cycle directly on josaa.nic.in and csab.nic.in.
