Every year around exam season, one question keeps surfacing among JEE Main aspirants: which topics have actually been removed from the syllabus, and which ones are safe to skip while revising? Here's a clear breakdown of what's been deleted, when it happened, and what the current position is for JEE Main 2026.
Current Status at a Glance
The major reduction to the JEE Main syllabus was carried out by NTA back in 2024, when a significant portion of content across Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics was removed to better align the exam with the NCERT curriculum. For JEE Main 2026, NTA has not announced any fresh deletions - the syllabus continues to follow the reduced structure set in 2024, carried forward largely unchanged through 2025 and into 2026.
Roughly 15% of the overall JEE Main syllabus was cut as part of that 2024 revision, while the remaining 85% has stayed the same since. A few additional minor removals — mainly around basic vector concepts in Physics — were also reflected in more recent syllabus updates, but nothing on the scale of the 2024 overhaul.
What's Been Removed from Physics
Physics saw some of the more substantial cuts. The Communication Systems/Communication Devices unit was removed entirely, along with several topics from other units — including Capacitors and Capacitance, parts of Optics, and specific subtopics within Semiconductors and Radioactivity such as isotopes, isobars, and isotones (the core concept of radioactivity itself remains in the syllabus). Basic vector-related topics — Scalars and Vectors, Addition and Subtraction of Vectors, Scalar and Vector Products, Unit Vectors, and Resolution of Vectors — were also dropped, on the reasoning that these are already covered under Mathematics.
What's Been Removed from Chemistry
Chemistry saw entire chapters removed, including States of Matter, Surface Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, and Polymers. Parts of Organic Chemistry, such as certain Qualitative Analysis topics, were also cut. On the inorganic side, the group-wise study of P-Block elements — covering detailed properties, preparation methods, uses, and structures of specific compounds — remains excluded from the current syllabus.
What's Been Removed from Mathematics
Mathematics lost two full units — Mathematical Induction and Mathematical Reasoning — along with select topics within Three-Dimensional Geometry. Unlike Physics, no new topics have been added to Mathematics to replace what was removed.
No New Additions, Except in Physics
While topics were removed across all three subjects, only Physics saw new topics added as part of the 2024 revision. Chemistry and Mathematics saw removals only, with nothing added back in to compensate.
What This Means for Your Preparation
Don't spend revision time on chapters like Communication Systems, States of Matter, Surface Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Polymers, Mathematical Induction, or Mathematical Reasoning — these are no longer part of the syllabus NTA tests on.
Cross-check your coaching material and question banks against the current official syllabus PDF, since a lot of older study material and question banks still include chapters that were removed back in 2024.
If you're unsure whether a specific chapter or subtopic is still included, verify it directly against the syllabus document published on the official JEE Main website rather than relying on secondhand lists, since minor details (like exactly which vector or radioactivity subtopics are excluded) can be easy to get wrong.
Treat this reduced syllabus as stable for now, since NTA has not signaled any further changes for the current cycle — but keep an eye on the official syllabus release each year regardless, in case that changes.
Key Things to Remember
The major syllabus reduction happened in 2024 and has continued largely unchanged through 2025 and 2026, with no fresh deletions announced this year.
Physics lost Communication Systems, Capacitors and Capacitance, parts of Optics, select vector topics, and specific subtopics within Semiconductors and Radioactivity.
Chemistry lost States of Matter, Surface Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Polymers, and parts of Organic Chemistry, along with group-wise P-Block element study.
Mathematics lost Mathematical Induction, Mathematical Reasoning, and parts of Three-Dimensional Geometry, with no new topics added in return.
Only Physics received new additions alongside its removals - Chemistry and Mathematics were reduced with nothing added back.
This article is based on NTA's officially released JEE Main syllabus and widely reported syllabus comparisons for recent sessions. Candidates should always verify the current, complete syllabus against the official PDF published on jeemain.nta.nic.in before finalizing their preparation plan.
